The Canon EOS 40D uses 14-bit conversion and this makes the raw
files relatively large.
The low power anti-aliasing also means that top quality JPEG files
are large than normal, and if you shoot at ISO 400, the noise level
will significantly increase the size further. JPEG typically range
from 8 MB to 17 MB with sharply detailed ISO 400 shots always the
largest.
Combine exposure bracketing with white balance bracketing-three
frames shots at different exposures, three white balance JPEGs
created from each exposure,
three raw files, nine JPEGs. WB bracketing involves only a single
shot and one a file, the variants are created from the raw file.
Highlight Tone Priority mode gives wedding and landscape
photographers the option to boost dynamic range for highlights when
shooting above ISO 200 – reproducing more tonal detail from wedding
dresses, clouds and other light coloured objects.
Overall, the Canon EOS 40D handles well and is just the right size
for general photography.
This is not a weatherproof body but it is sturdy and has reasonable
sealing.
The new Canon EOS 40D particular price and specifications bracket
overlaps the top of the amateur market but provides a perfectly
sound working tool for professionals.
