Lens in the 70 to 120mm range for DSLR cameras would be the best
option. I call this the portrait lenses. The advantage of lenses in
this range is that they fill the frame from a comfortable working
distance without producing unpleasant perspective distortion. A zoom
lens can also be used effectively here, giving you flexibility to
recompose the picture as the animal romps about. Just be careful to
avoid camera shake when you use longer focal lengths.
Most of the time, use a small aperture to obtain the deepest
possible depth of field, like 8.0 or 11. By doing that, you will
maximize the probability that the pet’s face will still be in
reasonably acceptable focus even when the pet romps about. However,
if you want the background to be blurred and let the pet’s face
dominating the picture then use a wider aperture like 2.8 or 4.0.
