Where food is required, give the child a raisin, a part of a
cookie, or any other food, which will not spill out of eating on the
child’s face. When using food as a bribe, a small amount will be
just as satisfactory. It may also serve as a teaser to get
expressions of anticipation.
Plastic fruits are also ideal. Noisy toys such as drum or whistle
will make a child enthusiastic. A real dial or button telephone,
regular size, usually delight them because it is not allowed as a
playing at home. Children are very fond of extremes.
To test for a shy or contrary child, light a match and ask the child
to blow it. If the response is not favorable, you may have trouble
getting cooperation. This particular child will require clever
approach.
Be sure to take advantage of new skills recently acquired by the
children. They will be eager to practice them-like just learning to
stand, drinking from a glass instead of a bottle, sitting in large
chair instead of a high chair, and similar accomplishments.
